Team collaboration software Slack changes free user policy, chat records and files are only retained for 1 year

#软件资讯Team collaboration software Slack has changed the data retention period for free users. From August 26, all messages and files will be deleted on a rolling basis every year, that is, messages and files will be permanently deleted after 1 year. Before this date, users who upgrade to any paid subscription plan can continue to retain data for a long time. After this date, if the files are deleted after upgrading, they cannot be restored. The well-known team collaboration software Slack (which has previously been acquired by CRM software developer Salesforce) published a blog today announcing a new policy for Slack's free users. Based on cost considerations, the chat history and file retention period for Slack's free users will be changed to a rolling 1-year period.

The rolling 1-year policy means that all content will be retained for a maximum of 1 year and will be deleted after 1 year. For example, the message sent by my colleague and I on June 26, 2024 will be deleted on June 26, 2025, while the message posted yesterday will be deleted on June 25, 2025.

This means that Slack free users will not be able to view messages and files from one year ago. Therefore, small and medium-sized enterprises and teams using free subscriptions need to back up their data on a daily basis to avoid deletion.

The new policy will be implemented from August 26, 2024, which means that messages and files sent from that day will only be retained for one year. Slack teams and companies with paid subscriptions will still maintain the existing policy, which is that data will not be automatically deleted.

Here are some questions and answers about the new policy:

Q: When will my message and file history be deleted?

A: All messages and files in the workspace older than 1 year will be deleted starting August 26, 2024. After that, data older than 1 year will be continuously deleted.

Q: How can I prevent my message and file history from being deleted?

A: Users can upgrade to a paid subscription before August 26, 2024, and messages will not be automatically deleted after the upgrade.

Q: Can my messages and files be recovered after they are deleted?

A: Once messages and files are deleted, they cannot be recovered, even if you contact support.

Q: Can I export the data in my workspace?

A: Slack free version subscriptions can also export data. For details, please refer to Slack's support documents related to import and export.

Q: Are there any changes to WorkSpaces that have data retention set to 90 days?

A: No change. If the user actively sets the data to be retained for only 90 days, the data will still be deleted on a rolling basis every 90 days.

Q: My workspace is part of a Slack for Charties subscription, is it impacted?

A: This subscription is also a free subscription plan and is therefore affected. Users can upgrade to Pro, Business + or Enterprise Grid subscriptions at a discount.

Q: I am currently on a free trial, is this affected?

A: If you do not upgrade to a paid subscription after the trial period, your data will be deleted.
