The second teaser trailer for The New Pope was released on Sunday.

And John Malkovich’s character, Sir John Brannox, looks set for a callous leadership battle as Jude Law, in his role of Pope Pius XIII, smirks as he awakes from a coma in the ominous new teaser for the Sky original.

As Jude, 46, is kept alive on a hospital bed inside the Vatican, John, 65, relishes in the fame which comes as he steps into his role as the New Pope – but is clear that he doesn’t see himself as simply an interim leader.

The latest series takes up after The Young Pope’s cliffhanger ending, which saw Pius XIII confronted with a moment of weakness that threatened to destroy his papacy.

The second trailer for the upcoming season begins with John Malkovich dressed in an elaborately embroidered miter and mantum for a photoshoot following his coronation as the new pope.

While in character, he insists: ‘Everyone in the world should know who the pope is. It’s not vanity, it’s necessity. ‘

Following the service, he sails through Venice followed by boats packed with paparazzi, with a voice over explaining:’ He’s a magnificent person, but your holiness is far more volatile. ‘

The teaser ends with Jude Law removing his oxygen mask, before opening his eyes and smirking into the camera.

Jude first played Lenny, who became the first American pope in history and took the name Pius XIII, in The Young Pope, which first hit screens in 2016.

The latest series takes up after The Young Pope’s cliffhanger ending, which saw Pius XIII confronted with a moment of weakness that threatened to destroy his papacy.

According to Variety, The New Pope will not be a ‘second series of The Young Pope’ but instead a ‘second limited series set in the world of the modern papacy’.

Filming for the nine-episode series started in Italy last year, Paolo Sorrentino has created the series with Umberto Contarello and Stefano Bises.

HBO and Sky announced the follow-up to acclaimed limited series The Young Pope in May 2017, with Sky Italia chief of content Andrea Scrosati saying: ‘Just like The Young Pope, Sorrentino is writing the script for the new show, but it will have a different twist than what would be expected. ‘

The New Pope is expected to be released in 2020 on HBO in the USA and on Sky in the UK.
