Coastal regions are on alert for a wall of water driven by strong winds and a high tide pulled up by an autumn supermoon to crash over sea defences . Foul weather is forecast to hold out into next week before another storm system takes a swipe at the nation ahead of next weekend. Torrential downpours from Saturday through to Tuesday will put swathes of the county on alert for travel chaos, floods and power outages.

A government extreme weather warning is in place through the next four days with people in affected regions urged to prepare for disruption.

Britons will get a brief respite from the wind and rain on Saturday morning before an Atlantic low-pressure system barges in later in the day.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “Wet and windy weather will arrive from the west on Saturday afternoon and this is the feature which we have issued warnings for.

“It will be unsettled from late afternoon all the way through a good chunk of Sunday when there will be wind and rain across much of England and Wales.

“Another low-pressure system arrives on Monday and there will be further unsettled weather through the start of the week.

“Although it is still early, there are signs for another spell of unsettled weather ahead of next weekend.”

Environment Agency flood alerts are in place across England and Wales amid forecasts for heavy rain though tonight and into the weekend.

Coastal regions are braced for huge waves to tumble over sea defences as stormy weather arrives from the Atlantic.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “ Local coastal / tidal flooding is probable for parts of the Severn Estuary and B ristol Channel from Saturday through to Monday, and more widely for parts of the south, west, and east coasts of England and the coasts of Wales on Sunday and Monday.

“Local surface water and river flooding are probable for parts of Wales and the north of England on Sunday.

“ Land, roads and some properties may flood and there may be travel disruption. ”

Autumn storms are expected to rage through the rest of September and into October, according to long-range outlooks.

The Met Office’s 30 – day forecast warns: “The unsettled weather looks set to remain as we go into early October, with further wet and windy weather likely to affect mainly northern and western parts of the UK, with the risk of gales at times.

“However, southern and eastern parts could see some drier and brigh ter periods, with the risk of overnight fog. ”

Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden added:“ The fine weather seen during September will be rapidly replaced by some rather unsettled conditions throughout the upcoming weeks.

“Low pressure will dominate proceedings and bring strong winds and heavy showers for many, particularly, western parts of the country.

“It isn’t all doom and gloom however as there is the chance of some bright spells developing in places, but these will be broken by heavy showers, most people will not get to see an entirely settled period of weather through the next couple of weeks. ”

He said: “Heavy rain over parts of Wales and parts of England during Saturday night and into Sunday with flooding likely in places.

“Through the period many parts of this area will see 20 to 30 mm of rain.

“Where the heaviest rain will fall remains uncertain but there is the potential for 30 to 40 mm of rain to fall within a few hours in places as well as 60 – 70 mm over the higher ground of Dartmoor, Wales and the Peak District.

A so-called Lunar Perigree will see the moon , on its elliptical orbit around Earth, make its closest approach to the planet.

Forecasters have warned the event will bring unusually high tides which will coincide with heavy rain.

Netweather meteorologist Terry Scholey said: “The very wet and at times windy weather continues, and with more heavy rain in the offering over the next few days on already sodden ground, more warnings of flooding will undoubtedly come.

“Not only that, a new moon on Saturday and a lunar perigee on Monday, the Moon’s closest approach to Earth, will produce higher tides.

“For a time into the new working week, a north-west wind giving gusts over 50 mph in the North Sea may cause somewhat of a storm surge, putting some coastal areas at risk of perhaps more serious flooding. ”
