The US-led coalition dropped more than 40 tonnes of bombs on an “Isis-infested island” in Iraq yesterday.
US F – 15 and F – 35 fighter jets dropped the bombs on Qanus island, a river island located in the Tigris about 175 miles northwest of Baghdad which officials claim is a hideout for Isis militants.
Footage released last night by Operation Inherent Resolve, the US army’s operational name for its military intervention against Isis, showed the land mass being carpet-bombed, creating billowing mushroom clouds.
“We’re denying Daesh the ability to hide on Qanus Island,” Major General Eric T Hill, commander of the special operations joint task force, said in a statement. “We’re seeing the conditions for our partner forces to continue bringing stability to the region.”
