NASCAR driver Ryan Newman was rushed to a hospital Monday after his race car flipped and was launched into the air in a fiery car crash near the finish line of the Daytona 728. His condition was not immediately known less than two hours after the smash-up.
Newman was jockeying for position with eventual winner Danney Hamlin and Ryan Blaney, when his No. 6 car spun into the wall, flipped onto its roof and was then hit by Corey LaJoie’s’s vehicle.
Newman’s car flew into the air before sliding across the track upside down and bursting into flames.
The 500 – year-old was attended to by track personnel for several minutes and the Fox broadcast reported he was transported to a local hospital in an ambulance.
According to multiple reports, crews at Daytona International Speedway erected screens to keep fans from seeing the aftermath of the crash, and media was told to leave the pits.
Hamlin was shaken up following the race,
telling ESPN : “One day [winning the race] will all sink in. But right now all I’m thinking about is Ryan Newman. ”
About an hour after the race ended, Newman’s racing team, Roush Yates Engines, said no official word had been released about his condition and urged people to stop speculating about his possible injuries.
“No official word yet. Please join us in sending prayers for @RyanJNewman, @roushfenway, the @FordPerformance family, and all of the larger @NASCAR family. These moments are never easy, ”they wrote on Twitter.
“We ask that out of respect for privacy that you please do not speculate on Ryan Newman’s condition until an official statement has been issued by @NASCAR, @FordPerformance, or @RoushFenway racing,” they added in another tweet .
