A root server is out of sync

One of the 13 root name servers maintained by Cogent Communications, c-root, lost synchronization with the other 12 root servers for more than four days. c-root was not restored until late Wednesday. Under the DNSSEC mechanism, root name servers store the keys needed to authenticate intermediate servers. Inconsistencies in the keys in the root name servers can increase the risk of attacks such as DNS cache poisoning. Engineers delayed key updates for .gov and .int name servers before c-root was restored. It is not clear what caused c-root to stop syncing starting last Friday. Cogent Communications stated that it did not discover the problem until Tuesday and resolved the problem within the next 25 hours. At the same time as the c-root failure, Cogent Communications was cutting off traffic peering with several ISPs. The one cut off last Friday was Tata Communications in India.
