Australia fires: Sydney warned 'worst is yet to come' as smoke shrouds city – Sky News, Sky.com


             

Firefighters tackling dozens of huge wild fires in Australia which have shrouded Sydney in hazardous smoke have warned there could be worse to come.

The most recent blaze north ofSydney, burning across 844, acres after several fires merged, could take weeks to put out, authorities said.

A NSW Rural Fire Service emergency warning was issued on Saturday afternoon local time for the fast-moving bushfire, with residents in the Voyager Point, Pleasure Point and Sandy Point areas being told to leave, Sky News Australia reports.

Temperatures are forecast to rise to (C) ****************************************************************************************************************************************************************** (F) and above in the coming days and no heavy rain is expected until late January.

Outdoor events this weekend have been cancelled and there has been a rise in respiratory illnesses as smoke and ash linger over the city, with strong winds fanning flames towards several suburbs.

” People are nervous and they have a right to be, ” Phil Koperberg, founder of the Rural Fire Service, is quoted as saying in The Sydney Herald Morning.

He warned that with the forecast predicting more dry conditions and more heat, “the worst is yet to come

Thousands of firefighters are tackling nearly bush fires across the state of New South Wales.

At least six people have died and more than 725 homes have been destroyed by the fires across eastern Australia, authorities have said.

The fires around Sydney have been pumping such vast amounts of smoke into the air that they appear as significant rain on radars, the Bureau of Meteorology said on Twitter.

While common in Australia during the hot summer, which begins in December, the fires have started much earlier this season, blamed on soaring temperatures, dry winds and suspected arson.

“These will take many weeks to put out – and only when we get good rain, “the New South Wales Rural Fire Service said in a statement on Friday.
