Double-decker bus crashes and overturns in Devon as cops declare ‘major incident’ – The Sun, Thesun.co.uk


MORE than a dozen people have been hurt, including one seriously injured, after a double-decker bus crashed and overturned into a field this morning.

Passengers were pulled from the wreckage of the smash that unfolded on the A 385 between Totnes and Paignton just before 11 am.

Photos show the Stagecoach Gold bus overturned, appearing to have plowed through bushes before coming to a rest in a field.

It appears to have been en route to Plymouth at the time of the crash.

Fire crews confirmed a number of people had been trapped inside the bus but have since been freed.

A witnesstold Devon Live:“Very bad accident outside Totnes.

“There are many people with very severe injuries. Maybe 20 with some trapped.

“I was passing and stopped to help but a lot of people too injured to move.”

An air ambulance is at the scene .

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson confirmed they were at the scene on the A 385 between Totnes and Paignton, near to Lombcrombe Cross.

They said: “A double-decker bus has overturned and a number of passengers have sustained injuries.

“Currently we believe that one person has sustained serious injuries.

“We also have over a dozen people who have sustained minor injuries and remain at the scene.”

The crash has been declared a “major incident” with ambulance and fire crews also rushing to the scene.

A spokesman for Stagecoach South West said: “We can confirm one of our buses has been involved in an incident on the A 385 Between Paignton and Totnes.

“Emergency services are at the scene. Our immediate thoughts are for those involved and we are helping the emergency services in any way that we can.

“Safety is our absolute priority and we will be assisting the investigation into the circumstances involved in the incident.”
