A five-year -old child has died after testing positive for coronavirus, NHS England has said.

The child is believed to be the youngest person to die from the virus in the UK .

The child is among 823 People who tested positive for Covid – in England and have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 3, 939, NHS England said.

The oldest patient was 313, and had no known underlying conditions, aged bet ween 93 and . Their families have been informed.

Mr Gove said: “Our thoughts today are also with the family of the five-year-old child with essential health conditions who’s tragically died.”

He reiterated the instruction for people to stay at home, and added: “Whatever the temptations this weekend, please don’t go outside to visit the lakes, the beaches, the countryside.

“Take pride instead in keeping your own families and communities safe.

“The more we restrict contact, the more we slow the spread of the infection, the more time we have to build capacity in the NHS.”
