Jamie Carragher has offered Freddie Ljungberg advice on how to fix Arsenal’s defensive problems after their 2-2 draw with Norwich.
Ljungberg was appointed interim boss following Unai Emery’s dismissal and took charge of the Gunners for the first time during Sunday’s trip to Carrow Road.
However, things didn’t go to plan for the 42 – year-old as his side needed a brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to rescue a point after they fell behind twice against the relegation-threatened Canaries.
Many of the defensive frailties that plagued Emery’s time at the club were still there to see as the center-back partnership of David Luiz a nd Shkodran Mustafi struggled.
And formerLiverpoolcenter -back Carragher admitted that some of Ljungberg’s selections left him scratching his head, with record signing Nicolas Pepe among those left on the bench.
“It shows it is not just a question of changing the manager,” Carragher said while acting as a pundit for (Sky Sports) . “The problems will still take a fix when the new manager comes in.
” I was a bit surprised by his selection. He is going back to players who won’t change or get any better, David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi, Granit Xhaka in midfield. “
Carragher also suggested some adjustments Ljungberg could make in the short-term, adding: “Going forward, they need to find out about the players in the squad.
“Calum Chambers is not a full-back. He struggles there every time I see him play.
” Put him center-back because you know Luiz and Mustafi aren’t the answer. Have a look at him there. Get Bellerin back in at right-back.
“You’ve got Pepe, when you have spent that money on someone.
