Microsoft improves WSL subsystem, new version will support mirroring host network interface and using external DNS

Windows SubSystem for Linux (WSL) is a subsystem feature developed by Microsoft in Windows 10/11. This feature allows users to install Linux systems and related environments on Windows, and developers can build a Linux development environment to work.

However, the WSL system also has many shortcomings in terms of functionality. A typical example is that it only supports NAT networks by default. Although IP addresses can be assigned in some way, the process is complicated and requires switching of virtual network cards.

Another problem is that developers cannot customize the DNS server in WSL, that is, WSL inherits Windows DNS settings by default, and may be affected by certain DNS security features in an enterprise environment.

Microsoft is now improving the WSL subsystem functionality to address the issues developers have complained about, including NAT network and DNS settings, so that WSL can be configured to mirror the host network and managed through routers and switches. It can also customize DNS servers for testing or resolving security restrictions on internal DNS.

Especially for network issues, developers can now configure WSL to mirror the network, select the network exit, support IPv6 addresses and LAN services, and even use both modes at the same time and switch between them for specific applications.

The main improvement in DNS is the new support for DNS tunneling, which can use the guest network service to set an external DNS address, so that it can be customized to any DNS to bypass certain security policy restrictions.

These new features will be released in the next WSL update. Interested developers are advised to follow the Microsoft Developer Blog to get new news on Build 2024 in the next few days.
