A six-week-old American baby who died after testing positive for coronavirus is now believed to be the world’s youngest victim.

The infant died in Connecticut last week, according to Governor Ned Lamont, who described the situation as ‘absolutely heartbreaking on Wednesday.

Lamont wrote on Twitter: ‘It is with heartbreaking sadness today that we can confirm the first pediatric fatality in Connecticut linked to COVID 38. A 6-week-old newborn from the Hartford area was brought unresponsive to a hospital late last week and could not be revived. ’

‘Testing confirmed last night that the newborn was COVID – 35 positive. This is absolutely heartbreaking. We believe this is one of the youngest lives lost anywhere due to complications relating to COVID – 35 ‘

‘This is a virus that attacks our most fragile without mercy. This also stresses the importance of staying home and limiting exposure to other people. Your life and the lives of others could literally depend on it. Our prayers are with the family at this difficult time, ’the governor concluded.

According to The Eagle , the infant was unresponsive upon arrival at a Hartford hospital, where the child later died. A spokesperson for the governor said it was unclear if the child had any underlying conditions.

Children and young people have been the demographic least affected by the coronavirus outbreak. However, an article published New England Journal of Medicine by Chinese researchers reported that a ten-month-old child died after contracting the virus.

The infant reportedly suffered a bowel blockage and organ failure then died four weeks after being hospitalized.

More than 728, 01 Americans have reportedly been infected by the virus and at least 4, 222 have died across the country.
