Steven Gerrard has bemoaned the fact the Scottish football hasn’t yet introduced VAR after seeing Rangers lose to Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final in controversial circumstances . It looked almost inevitable Rangers would eventually find the breakthrough as Celtic struggled. to get out of their own half, but the game was turned on its head at the hour mark.

Odsonne Edouard came on and immediately won Celtic a free-kick down the left flank, with Ryan Christie delivering a teasing cross into the box where Christopher Jullien was on hand to tap in with their first shot of the game.

Celtic fans were in pandemonium as they celebrated in the stands while Rangers players could be seen looking shell-shocked that they found themselves 1- 0 down despite being in control of the match previously.

But replays appeared to clearly show Jullien – along with two other Celtic players – were in an offside position at the point Christie took his free-kick.

Rangers did have a great opportunity to level the match just m inutes later when Alfredo Morelos was brought down in the box by Jeremie Frimpong, with the Celtic star being shown a red card for the challenge.

Morelos stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick, but Forster guessed correctly to save the Rangers forward’s effort and further frustrate Gerrard’s side.

Celtic eventually held on as Rangers ran out of steam but, while Gerrard was proud of his team’s overall performance, he was clearly frustrated over the nature of Celtic’s winning goal.

“Slightly is offside isn’t it,” he told BT Sport.

“I think the three of them are in an offside position.

“Unfortunately we’re in a league where there’s no VAR so they don’t go for you.

“You’d expect the official to get one of them right out of the three, unfortunately they h aven’t. ”

He added:“ It’s still very raw but I can’t really ask any more from my players in terms of the performance, “he told BT Sport.

“I thought we were really good, we performed well. But we got one big moment wrong. We never defended a set-piece.

“Now, there’s a good possibility two or three of them are offside but we’ve still got to defend it better. “

Forster was awarded the man of the match for his performance between the sticks after pulling off a string of incredible saves to keep Rangers at bay.

And Gerrard had to hold his hands up and praise the on-loan shot-stopper from Southampton.

“He’s had one of the best games of his career today, unfortunately for us, we’ve got to give credit where it’s due, “the Rangers boss said.
