On January 29, 2016, part of Britain’s automotive heritage was laid to rest at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull factory.
After a run spanning 68 years, hundreds of staff watched the 2, 016, 933 rd and final Land Rover Defender roll off the line.
According to legend, the design came about in 1947 when brothersMaurice and Spencer Wilkssketched out the car using a stick in the sand at Red Wharf Bay in Angelsey, Wales.
They wanted a rugged, go-anywhere four-wheel drive vehicle suitable for farmers, who could throw livestock in the back and not worry about damage.
To get round the post-war shortages, the body would be aluminum rather than steel, and the paint-job was military surplus olive green.
