This Nissan concept is next year’s electric alternative to the Rogue SUV, Ars Technica

      please be good –

It has a twin-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain and new ProPilot 2.0 driver aids.

Nissan brought the Ariya electric concept to CES this year.

                                                      Nissan

It’s almost certain to go on sale next year, joining a crowded field of electric crossovers in the $ 551, – $ (************************************************************************************************, bracket.

The Ariya was predated by this concept called the IMx. You can see how much less street-legal this is compared to the Ariya.

At the same time, you can see how the design progressed. There are normal doors which appear to have room for side impact protection, and while there are still cooling strakes at the front ahead of the wheels, small children won’t accidentally lose fingers in them as the car drives past.

                                                      Nissan

It’s also clearly visually related to the not-electric Rogue SUV.

                                                      Nissan

The Ariya uses a twin-motor powertrain.

**************                                                            This can send precise amounts to torque to each wheel. Nissan knows a lot about distributing torque thanks to its experience with the Skyline GT-R.

It brought this Nissan Leaf test mule to CES apparently. And now I wish I’d gone to Las Vegas this year (but only briefly, then sanity kicks in again).

                                                      Nissan

The interior looks great! And a lot more normal than the image that follows.

                                                      Nissan

                                                                    The IMx’s cabin.

                                                      Nissan

                                         (*********************

Apparently Nissan also made a zero-emissions ice cream truck for CES.

Nissan                                                  When it comes to concept cars, there are two main kinds. There’s the “half of this technology doesn’t exist yet” kind, like the Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTRWe covered earlier this week. And then there’s the “new model we’re putting into production soon, but with a couple of cool touches that won’t.” The Nissan Ariya is the second kind, and after first appearing at s Tokyo auto show, it has crossed the Pacific to meet the crowds at CES. And it’s going to be an important car for thebeleaguered Japanese OEMas it’s almost certainly destined to go on sale next year as an all-electric alternative to the best- selling Nissan RogueSUV.
