Sheffield, Birmingham and Sheffield Slough are the three coronavirus hotspots in the UK outside of London.

The capital has the worst infection rate in the country, with (cases per) , 30 people.

However, Sheffield is not far behind, with , while Birmingham has 73 and the town of Slough has .

The figures, put together by the thinktank Center for Cities , are based on coronavirus statistics, however the hardest hit areas may change when new data is released this evening.

London and Birmingham have the most cases, with 6, and 651 infected people respectively.

Sheffield has 521 diagnosed patients, while Slough has just 98, although this equates to cases per 380, (people.

While Slough has a population of 380, , London has almost nine million residents.

In terms of total numbers of cases, Hampshire comes second to Birmingham with patients.

Hull has the lowest proportional number of cases with just 30 people contracting the disease – or three per , 24.

        It is believed Birmingham’s high number of patients is the result of its population and status as a travel hub.

        It is not clear why Slough and Sheffield have been hit so hard by coronavirus.

        The director of public health in Sheffield says it is due to more tests being done in the city than in other areas.

        Other lar ge cities, such as Liverpool and Manchester, have been spared the same level of infections.
