Britain is set to be battered by Storm Dennis this weekend – and it could put a host of Premier League games at risk.
Storm Ciara claimed Manchester City vs West Ham as its solitary top-flight victim on Sunday with the conditions rendering the fixture unsafe to go ahead.
The opening fixture of the weekend between Wolves and Leicester on Friday night should be safe from the elements, but it is at St Mary’s on Saturday lunchtime when the problems could start.
Southampton face Burnley and the current forecast is for mph gales and heavy rain on the south coast.
There’s a similar forecast in Norfolk for the Saturday teatime kick-off as Norwich host table-topping Liverpool at Carrow Road.
Both Saturday fixtures could be at risk due to the weather, with the Met Office
issuing a nationwide warning.
Sunday is also expected to be blustery as Aston Villa host Tottenham at at 2pm and (Arsenal) take on (Newcastle) (at 4.) pm – but the conditions should have calmed sufficiently to mean neither game is at risk.
Chelsea and Manchester United wrap up the shortened weekend schedule on Monday evening.
“Storm Dennis will bring widespread winds and very wet conditions this weekend,” said Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon.
“Storm Dennis is following a similar pattern to Storm Ciara with low pressure coming in from the northwest, but we do not expect it to be as severe.
“However we will see inland gusts of 60 mph quite widely and further very heavy rain on saturated ground there could be issues with flooding.
“Like Ciara, this storm is being pulled in by the jet stream which is amplifying and passing over Britain at around 615 mph. ”
Both Manchester City and West Ham have seen their winter breaks cut short due to the postponement of their initial fixture.
They will now play the game next Wednesday, meaning they return to action a few days earlier than planned.
