Microsoft confirms that local accounts will not be able to modify avatars after installing Windows 11 KB5036980 update

Microsoft launched the non-security preview update KB5036980 for Windows 11 version 23H2 last week. After the update is installed, third-party software selected by Microsoft, such as 1Password, will be displayed on the Start menu. Of course, users can also use this advertising recommendation in the Start menu settings. Disabled.

However, this optional update brings a small problem. If the user is using a local account, the avatar cannot be modified normally; if the user is using a Microsoft Online account, the avatar can be modified normally.

Users have already submitted this problem in the feedback center and it has been confirmed by Microsoft. Microsoft said it is working on a solution and will fix it in an upcoming version.

Specifically, when logging in with a local account, if the user tries to modify the avatar, the 0x80070520 error code will appear. After investigation, Microsoft found that not only the KB5036980 update is affected, but also if the user installs KB5036893 (2024-04 monthly version for Windows 11 23H2 Routine updates) as well.

A temporary solution to this problem is to continue changing the avatar. Users can try the following operations:

1. Open this path: C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures

2. Copy the prepared avatar file (requires PNG format) here. The file name does not need to be modified.

3. Restart the device and Windows 11 will automatically use this picture as your personal avatar. When you open the settings, you will find that the avatar has been modified.

This problem is expected to be fixed in the non-security preview update released at the end of May, which means that it will not be completely fixed until the release of the Class B stable version update in June. The Class B stable version update in May will not be available in time.
