With a win tonight in Detroit, and a Cleveland loss in the city of Chicago, the Minnesota’s magic number has dropped to zero. TheTwinshave won the American League Central.
It’s been a long time coming. Minnesota hasn’t won their division since 2010, when folks likeJason RepkoandRon Mahayled the team to the Central crown. They were trailed by aWhite Soxteam at the end of their Ozzie Guillen era; a roster featuringMark Kotsay,Omar Vizquel, andJohn Danksfinished six games back.
It’s a fonder memory than Minnesota’s most recent postseason appearance, even though both trips to the playoffs ended with a hasty first-round exit to theYankees.
And even though another matchup with the Bronx Bombers could begin next Friday, tonight’s not the time for what-ifs and look-aheads. There will be plenty of time for that in the week-and-a-half ahead of the postseason.
What’s important is that, when those playoff games arrive, your Minnesota Twins will be right there in the thick of it. And next April, a brand-new flag will be flying over Target Field.
Let’s make it a special one.
