A US diplomat’s wife who fled the UK after allegedly killing a biker in a crash was previously rapped for “failing to pay attention” while driving.
Anne Sacoolas, 42– who claimed diplomatic immunity after 19 – Year- oldHarry Dunn died in a head-on collision– got the telling off for a traffic violation in 2006.
But cops in the US state of Virginia – where the road offence took place – could not provide further details as files were destroyed a decade ago. *************
Police here believe she hit Harry with her Volvo after driving for 400 yards on the wrong side of the road in August when leaving RAF Croughton, Northants.
Her husband Jonathan, 43, was working “in intelligence” at the base, which is used by the US as a spy station called the Joint Intelligence Analysis Center.
The case sparked adiplomatic row after Anne was granted diplomatic immunityand fled the UK before she could be quizzed over causing death by dangerous driving.
There was no sign of her yesterday at the home in Vienna, Virginia, where she lived for three years before moving to Britain.
Neighbors said they saw a removals truck last month and a sign at the home says: “We are renters and not who you are looking for.”
Petrol station worker Harry was an avid motorcyclist with more than 50, 000 miles under his belt.
Mrs Sacoolas had only been in the country three weeks and it is thought she forgot to drive on the left.
Harry’s mother Charlotte Charles said she was “appalled and disgusted” Mrs Sacoolas had not been forced to answer questions.
She added that the family – including Harry’s twin Niall – had been “deprived of the ability to grieve”.
IMMUNITY EXPLAINED
THE 1961 Vienna Convention makes foreign diplomats and their families immune from prosecution in their host country.
Those who hold that status cannot be automatically charged with a crime – but immunity can be waived by the state that has sent them following an appeal from the Foreign Office.
The immunity only usually covers those based in London, but a special deal with the US extended that to RAF Croughton.
