Nigel Dodds, deputy leader of the DUP, whose support will be critical to getting the PM’s plan through parliament, says the proposals “removes the trap” of the controversial Irish backstop – the controversial insurance policy aimed at avoiding a hard border that led to Theresa May’s deal being rejected three times.

Mr Johnson will later be hitting the phone to EU leaders as he bids to sell his proposed Brexit deal.
