When an MP of 22 years standing quits the Labor Party after 55 years, she deserves more than a passing mention by the media. Sadly, Dame Louise Ellman’s announcement last night has been all but swept away by this morning’s excitement over the prime minister’s new deal on the UK’s departure from the European Union.
Dame Louise, who has been the target for some of the worst examples of anti-Semitism that Jeremy Corbyn’s Labor Party has yet produced,has warned that her former party’s leader is “not fit to serve as our prime minister”. It remains to be seen whether she will stand as an independent in her Liverpool Riverside seat at the next election.
